In out model
The Idea that something goes out is untrue, unless you have a break or a fracture bad enough to stick out where it shouldn’t. The idea that something is therefore clicked back in is also untrue. A nice concept that lots of things in life click into place like doors, cupboards and some watches for example. In the human body it is simply untrue and contradicts experience e.g. why does it keep going out?
We are asymmetric beings look at your face, your body the two halves are not identical and neither should they be. The two sides of the body grown outward from the spine and of course grow at different rates in different tissues. Aligned in our spine stems from over 100 years ago when a misalignment was thought to be the problem. It is not about misalignment of vertebrae even though sometimes this may be part of the physical picture. Why do I keep going out of alignment also fosters a long term view that there is no point putting me right cause I only go and put me out again! An unhelpful educational tool to facilitate a lay persons ability to weigh in the balance the longer term pros and cons of having Chiropractic Care.
Inevitable decline with age
The symptoms of ageing are the same as the symptoms of de-conditioning. Over time we get stuck into not doing much variety of movement with our body. The biological ageing of an organism is called senescence which occurs at the last 12-18 months of life, not the last 20-30 years of life.
Standing on a hose ‘ trapped nerve’
Nervous tissue can actually get stuck however it would be a dysfunction of the connective tissue (fascia) which facilitates nerve movement.
Jam out of a doughnut ‘slipped disc’
The decreasing spinal height will occur over many years of a slumped posture… let your self go for long enough and you’ll stretch the discs of the spine past their elastic boundary and the tissue breaks down. An insidious onset of a disc complaint is about as regular in rate of incidence as a task brought it on e.g. lifting something or twisting or getting up out of bed.
This is the Chiropractic version of what happens in the spine over time if we have a decreasing variety of movement over time. Chiropractic adjustments provide greater movement and thus keep you more mobile than you would be without them, however co-ordinated motion is key to MSK health, not just global mobility. The subluxation degeneration model describes changes over time that would relate to de-conditioning; unfortunately Chiropractic adjustments can’t keep you well conditioned without you exercising. With exercise you cannot save up fitness you are as healthy as the amount and variety of your regular exercise / movement schedule…
